Universal Pictures released the inaugural teaser trailer for the live-action reimagining of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ on Tuesday, setting a definitive theatrical release date of June 13, 2025. The promotional footage focuses heavily on a shot-for-shot recreation of the 2010 animated classic’s pivotal sequence where the protagonist, Hiccup, first makes physical contact with the Night Fury dragon, Toothless. Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy, returns to write, direct, and produce the remake, ensuring a high degree of narrative continuity rare for studio transitions between animation and live-action formats.

Principal photography concluded in May 2024 following an extensive shoot based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, utilizing the soundstages at Titanic Studios to construct the Viking village interiors. Location scouts secured permission to film key exterior sequences at Tollymore Forest Park and the rugged coastal cliffs near Dunseverick Castle, which serve as the topographical basis for the fictional Isle of Berk. Production logs confirm that additional aerial units were deployed to the Faroe Islands and Iceland to capture the atmospheric plate photography required for the high-altitude dragon flight simulations.

The film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, acting opposite Gerard Butler, who physically reprises his role as the chieftain Stoick the Vast after voicing the character in the animated series. “It is so dialed-up in terms of stakes, having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around,” DeBlois stated regarding the visual effects challenges handled by the Framestore team. The production budget, estimated at $150 million, faced significant logistical hurdles due to the 2023 industry strikes, which necessitated a fourteen-month delay from the project’s original March 2024 launch window.
