Cynthia Erivo secures a historic double nomination in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes for her role as Elphaba in ‘Wicked: For Good’. This marks the first time a Black woman receives two nods in the category, following her 2025 nomination for the first ‘Wicked’ film. The achievement highlights persistent underrepresentation, with only 12 Black women previously nominated since the category’s inception. Erivo joins five competitors, underscoring the Globes’ evolving recognition of diverse performers.

‘Wicked: For Good’ continues the Oz prequel saga, focusing on Elphaba’s alliance with Glinda amid rising tyranny. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the sequel filmed concurrently with the original over 160 days in 2023 and 2024 at Scott Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. Ariana Grande reprises Glinda, earning her second consecutive nod in the category. The production employed 2,500 visual effects shots, with a $150 million budget split across both films.

Erivo’s portrayal draws from Gregory Maguire’s novel, emphasizing Elphaba’s green-skinned outsider journey and vocal demands. She trained six months with coach Eric Vetro, hitting notes up to E6 in songs like “Defying Gravity” reprise. The film holds 89% on Rotten Tomatoes from 400 reviews, praising its spectacle and score by Stephen Schwartz. Universal Pictures released it November 21, grossing $450 million domestically in three weeks.

This milestone builds on Erivo’s prior honors, including a Tony for ‘The Color Purple’ and an Oscar nod for ‘Harriet’. She told Variety the recognition feels “profound,” stating, “To be the first Black woman to achieve this twice is a testament to the work still needed, but also the doors opening wider.” The category’s history includes one Black winner, Angela Bassett for ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ in 1994. Voters, now 325 strong after 2021 reforms, selected from 120 eligible musicals.

Erivo’s snub at the Critics Choice Awards, where ‘Wicked: For Good’ earned seven nods including Best Picture, contrasts this Globe success. Co-star Jonathan Bailey received a supporting actor nomination for Fiyero. Choreographer Kenny Ortega oversaw 20 dance sequences, incorporating aerial rigging for flying scenes. Costume designer Paul Tazewell used 3,000 yards of emerald fabric for Elphaba’s wardrobe.

The Globes ceremony airs January 11 on CBS, hosted by Nikki Glaser. Erivo’s trajectory positions her for Oscar contention, with the Academy announcing nominees January 17. Past double nominees in the category include Julie Andrews for ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Victor/Victoria’. This nod elevates ‘Wicked’s franchise, which sold 12 million soundtrack units globally.

Chu credits Erivo’s emotional depth for the sequel’s resonance, noting her improvisation in key confrontations. Cinematographer Alice Brooks shot 60% in IMAX for immersive Oz vistas. Sound engineer Oliver Tarney blended live orchestra from Abbey Road with digital enhancements. Erivo’s performance boosts the film’s awards momentum amid competition from ‘One Battle After Another’ and ‘Sinners’.
