Sony’s Sinister Six Movie Still in the Works Despite Challenges

Sony Pictures has been eager to make a Sinister Six movie for quite some time. Although an earlier attempt tied to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ series fell through, discussions and plans have been ongoing.

Drew Goddard, known for his work on ‘Cabin in the Woods,’ had completed a script that would have brought together villains like Rhino, Harry Osborn’s Green Goblin, Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter against Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. The film was set to explore their battle and eventual redemption.

In a 2021 interview with Collider, Garfield expressed his excitement about the project and his collaboration with Goddard, stating, ‘I don’t know how close it got, but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting. I’ve got to say, because I love Drew so much… We just got on like a house on fire.

I loved his vision, he’s so unique and odd and off-kilter and unconventional in his creative choices. So that was definitely a fun couple of months, but life. It would have been cool. Maybe one day he’ll get to do it, but it would’ve been cool.’

Despite the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving on with Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man, Sony continues to expand its own universe with mixed results. While the Venom movies have found success, others like Morbius and Madame Web did not meet expectations. There’s concern that underperformances in upcoming titles such as Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter could spell trouble for the franchise.

However, insider MTTSH suggests that Sony is still progressing with the Sinister Six, drawing from hints in previous films such as Michael Keaton’s Vulture appearance in the criticized post-credits scene of Morbius. This suggests that while plans may have shifted, the concept of a villain team-up remains on the table.

Garfield’s recent return as Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and news that he is ‘locked in’ for at least two more MCU films adds another layer of possibility for revisiting Goddard’s original vision, perhaps with a new team lineup. This development keeps the door open for what could be a unique cinematic experience, blending old plans with new possibilities in Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
