Joe Locke’s Role as Wiccan in ‘Agatha All Along’ Marks a Milestone for LGBTQ+ Marvel Fans
Joe Locke, known for his role in ‘Teen’, has been unveiled as Wiccan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) show ‘Agatha All Along’. This introduction is a significant moment for queer representation within the MCU.
Since its start in 2008 with ‘Iron Man’, the MCU has grown massively, featuring 34 movies and several TV series. However, queer representation has been minimal. Examples include a brief scene in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and Valkyrie’s character in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, both having scenes involving LGBTQ+ characters cut.
The ‘Eternals’ introduced a more substantial gay character, Phastos, yet despite this progress, Joe Locke himself pointed out that the MCU was lagging in terms of LGBTQ+ inclusion before ‘Agatha All Along’.

The plot twist at the end of episode five reveals Locke’s character as Billy Maximoff, or Wiccan, a significant development not just for the series but especially for LGBTQ+ Marvel fans. Wiccan, son of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), also known as the Scarlet Witch, represents a crucial queer superhero in the MCU.
In an earlier episode, ‘Teen’ already hinted at his sexuality through a conversation with his boyfriend. In the comic books, Wiccan is romantically linked with Hulkling, another superhero. This raises hopes among fans to see this relationship develop on screen, whether Kit Connor, Locke’s co-star from ‘Heartstopper’, plays Hulkling or not.
The introduction of young heroes like Wiccan hints at a future focus on a new generation in the MCU. Characters like Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, and Ironheart have already made appearances.
According to Fiction Horizon citing Production Weekly, there’s buzz about a ‘Young Avengers’ project in the works as of early 2024. With heroes like Wiccan taking the lead, the stage is set for potentially assembling the Young Avengers.
Should ‘Agatha All Along’ conclude with Wiccan’s story continuing, it will solidify a groundbreaking step for LGBTQ+ superheroes in the MCU. With Joe Locke at the forefront, it’s an exciting time for diversity and representation in superhero narratives. We just might see the Young Avengers come together soon, with a proudly gay superhero leading them.
