Batman’s Origin Story Takes a Twisted New Turn in DC’s Latest Comic
DC Comics is introducing an intriguing twist to Batman’s well-known origin in their Detective Comics series, now led by Tom Taylor and Mikel Janin.
As part of the All In era, this series will not alter the core details of how Bruce Wayne became Batman following the tragic murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, by Joe Chill. However, the storyline adds layers that could shift how we view these pivotal moments.

In Detective Comics #1090, the narrative interweaves past and present scenes, revealing crucial events involving Thomas Wayne.
In a flashback, we find Thomas at a hospital, making a life-saving decision for a young man and his pregnant girlfriend, who was a victim of domestic abuse.
Despite the boyfriend’s dire prognosis and a recommendation against treating him, Thomas chooses to honor his medical oath to save lives, a decision that has unforeseen consequences.
The mother, named Evelyn, pleads with Thomas to protect her baby from her abusive partner by telling him that she lost the child during the accident.
Martha Wayne steps in to offer Evelyn a chance to escape her dangerous relationship by providing the means to start anew.
These scenes set the stage for a significant revelation—Thomas ultimately decides to treat the boyfriend, who is none other than Joe Chill, allowing him to leave the hospital fully recovered.

This choice by Thomas Wayne introduces a dramatic irony to Batman’s backstory, as he unknowingly saved the man who would later murder both him and his wife, Martha. This adds a complex layer to the ethos of the Wayne family, characterized by a steadfast commitment to their moral code, regardless of the personal cost.
The present-day storyline in the comic features Batman pursuing a mysterious villain possibly linked to his father’s past actions. Additionally, a new character, Scarlett Martha Scott, emerges as a significant figure.
Once aided by Martha Wayne in her childhood, Scarlett is hinted to possibly be the offspring of Joe Chill and Evelyn, tying her directly to the Wayne family’s legacy.
This comic issue not only deepens the mythology surrounding Batman’s origins but also sets up potential new conflicts for him to navigate, especially as he uncovers his father’s indirect role in that fateful night.
