Creating manga is a tough gig, demanding long hours and serious dedication. But for the elite in the industry, the rewards are substantial, especially now as the global spotlight shines brighter on manga.

Recently, Yen Press shared some eye-opening updates at New York Comic Con about how manga creators earn their keep. Turns out, it’s not just about the page rate, which averages $88 but can soar for seasoned pros.

The real game-changer in a manga creator’s earnings is sales royalties. For instance, Eiichiro Oda, the genius behind ‘One Piece’, tops the earnings chart.

With over 515 million copies of his work in circulation, his royalties have netted him a whopping $206 million USD.

This doesn’t even include his earnings from merchandise, anime rights, or film adaptations. It’s no wonder he’s considered the greatest of all time in the manga world.

Joining Oda at the top are manga greats like Akira Toriyama of ‘Dragon Ball’ fame, who’s notched up $118 million in royalties, and Gosho Aoyama, known for ‘Detective Conan’, with similar earnings.

Other big names like Fujiko F. Fujio, the duo behind ‘Doraemon’, and Takao Saito, creator of ‘Golgo 13’, have also made a fortune, each racking up at least $120 million from sales alone.

It’s not just publishing that fills their pockets. Many manga creators have significantly increased their net worth through licensing deals and adaptations.

Eiichiro Oda, for instance, has leveraged ‘One Piece’ into a massive $200+ million fortune, benefiting from various media adaptations, including a Netflix series and theme park events.

Similarly, creators like Rumiko Takahashi and Hajime Isayama (creator of ‘Attack on Titan’) have amassed considerable wealth from their creations’ widespread appeal, far beyond book sales.

We’re seeing new artists like Takeru Hokazono, creator of ‘Kagurabachi’, learning that success in manga can open doors to lucrative opportunities in licensing and beyond. As the manga scene continues to evolve, it’s clear that the financial rewards can be substantial for those who make it big.
