Superman Lore Takes a Dark Turn as DC Alters His Father’s Legacy

In the latest twist in Superman lore, his father’s legacy takes a darker turn. The Phantom Zone, already known for its harsh conditions, has become an even more daunting place for its prisoners.

This development unfolds in ‘Action Comics #1072,’ crafted by the talents of Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Michael Shelfer, Matt Herms, and Dave Sharpe.

Traditionally, the Phantom Zone was a space where Krypton’s criminals could serve time without aging, trapped in a state where they couldn’t feel or interact with their environment—effectively frozen in time.

This was thought to be a humane alternative to the harsher punishments of the past. However, the latest changes introduced by a character named Aethyr have transformed the Phantom Zone into a battleground of survival.

Aethyr attempted to improve the conditions within the Phantom Zone by making the inhabitants tangible. Initially, this change allowed the prisoners to physically interact.

Unfortunately, this led to chaos as the now tangible criminals began to fight, forcing Aethyr to take even more drastic measures.

He introduced severe weather and monstrous threats into the zone, adding physical dangers to the psychological tortures of sensory deprivation.

Now, the Phantom Zone is a place where no one deserves to be sent. It’s become one of the worst prisons in the DC Universe, where the only activities available to the inmates are fighting and killing each other.

Superman may find himself unable to use the Phantom Zone as a solution for dealing with villains, given these horrifying new conditions.

The story of this transformed Phantom Zone is explored in ‘Action Comics #1072,’ available now from DC Comics. It’s a gripping read for anyone following the adventures of the Man of Steel.
