Marvel’s Venom War Revives a Terrifying Supervillain Legend
Shriek, a fearsome villain from the ’90s Marvel comics, has made a dramatic return in the recent ‘Venom War: Lethal Protectors #2‘. As New York City faces an overwhelming threat from a horde of Zombiotes, Silver Sable and her symbiote-armed mercenaries are running out of options.
Despite having Shriek back, there’s no certainty she’ll help stop the chaos she’s been thrust into after being imprisoned for years.
Frances Barrison, widely known as Shriek, first appeared in 1993’s ‘Spider-Man Unlimited #1’, a creation of Tom DeFalco and Ron Lim. Following a harsh and abusive childhood, she ventured into drug dealing, using her mutant abilities.

Her criminal life was full of setbacks until she met Carnage at the Ravencroft Institute, which marked a turning point for her. Joining forces with Carnage, Shriek became a notorious figure in Marvel’s rogue gallery, often outmatching many with her lethal prowess.
In the 2019 ‘Absolute Carnage’ storyline, Shriek joined the Cult of Knull, led by Carnage. Her unwavering dedication was evident as she aided Carnage in collecting numerous Codexes from their victims for dark purposes.
Her sacrifice was immense, having her spine removed and her Codex extracted to awaken the Demogoblin, a demonic force, marking another peak in her villainous career.
The storyline of ‘Venom War: Lethal Protectors #2’ sees Shriek potentially playing a pivotal role, though her intentions remain ambiguous.
The comic book, featuring work by Sabir Pirzada and Lucas Maresca, with colors by Arif Prianto and lettering by Joe Sabino, is available now under Marvel Comics.
