Darth Vader’s Voice Actor Only Made $7,000 – Here’s Why

It’s hard to imagine ‘Star Wars’ without the iconic voice of Darth Vader, but did you know that the voice actor behind it was only paid $7,000? This fact might come as a surprise, especially considering how famous the character became.

Darth Vader, with his chilling voice and commanding presence, left a lasting mark on the world of movies. Yet the man behind the voice, James Earl Jones, made far less than you might expect for such an iconic role.

During the production of the original ‘Star Wars’ movie, budgets were tight, and no one could have guessed the massive impact the film would have.

Jones was hired to give Vader a unique and powerful voice, one that would intimidate audiences without needing to be loud. But at the time, ‘Star Wars’ was just another sci-fi film with little promise of becoming a legendary franchise.

The studio saw it as a high-risk project, so they kept expenses low wherever they could. This included Jones’ pay, which turned out to be only $7,000 for his work on the film.

Interestingly, Jones wasn’t involved in the entire creation of Darth Vader. He only provided the voice, while David Prowse wore the suit and physically portrayed the character.

This might have also played a role in the studio’s decision to keep Jones’ fee minimal. They didn’t expect that the deep, resonant voice of Jones would become one of the most memorable parts of ‘Star Wars.’

As a result, Jones didn’t earn any extra royalties for his voice work in the movie. Once he was paid for his initial contribution, he wasn’t entitled to further earnings from the massive success that followed.

Looking back, Jones himself has mentioned that he didn’t mind the payment at the time. He thought of it as just another job. However, as ‘Star Wars’ grew into a cultural phenomenon, it’s easy to see why fans are surprised by how little he was paid.
