A Fresh Take on Superman and New DCU Developments
James Gunn is stirring excitement with his unique vision for the DC Universe, bringing a fresh approach that moves away from the darker tones of previous adaptations. Recently, there’s been talk about casting Josh Brolin as Hal Jordan in HBO’s ‘Lanterns.’ Although Brolin, at 56, isn’t the first choice many would expect for the Green Lantern Corps member, it seems he fits the role of an older, wise figure who mentors the younger, more impulsive John Stewart. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Brolin’s knack for portraying grumpy characters is perfect for the role.
Gunn is also shaking things up with Superman, opting for a ‘complete shift to hardcore sci-fi and fantasy.’ This new universe is a stark contrast to ‘Man of Steel,’ set in a world far different from ours where heroes have influenced history for ages. It sounds like Gunn is aiming to craft a universe more akin to ‘Star Wars’ than Marvel, with multiple projects spanning various timelines.
Richtman says he’s heard Superman is “fantastic” and calls it “a complete shift to hardcore sci-fi and fantasy, the exact opposite of Man of Steel.”
He adds, “It’s set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we’ll see how it affected this world’s history and has shaped the DCU.”
“The DCU will feature various projects set across different timelines, not just present day. So more in line with the approach of Star Wars than Marvel.”
In addition to these exciting developments, there’s new Superman merchandise available, highlighting his struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. David Corenswet is stepping into the role of Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane. The cast also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.

Other notable cast members are Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Farรญa as The Engineer, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. We’ll see Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Superman’s adoptive parents. Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, Christopher MacDonald, and Nicholas Hoult round out the cast as Steve Lombard, Cat Grant, Ron Troupe, and Lex Luthor, respectively.
Adding to the excitement, Milly Alcock is expected to make a brief appearance as Supergirl, setting the stage for her own movie, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’ Superman’s return to the big screen is set for July 11, 2025.
Gunnโs vision for the DCU promises a refreshing and expansive storytelling landscape, moving away from the familiar paths trodden by the DCEU. It’s an ambitious direction that could redefine how superhero stories are told, making it a thrilling time for both new and longtime fans.
