‘Agatha All Along’ Debuts with Lackluster Numbers on Disney+
According to Variety, Disney+’s new series ‘Agatha All Along’ kicked off with a relatively modest 9.3 million views in its first week, falling short of expectations set by previous Marvel and franchise releases. The show, a continuation of the character Agatha Harkness from the 2021 series ‘WandaVision,’ premiered on September 18.
This viewing figure positions ‘Agatha’ behind other recent series launches such as ‘The Acolyte,’ which notched 11.1 million views in just five days, and ‘Ahsoka,’ a Star Wars series that quickly amassed 14 million views within the same timeframe. Even ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ had a stronger start with 13.3 million views in six days, highlighting the comparative underperformance of ‘Agatha All Along.’
The first episode’s viewership translates into about 6.5 million hours watched, according to Disney’s method of calculating views by dividing the total time spent watching by the runtime of the episode. This method shows substantial engagement but lacks the impressive burst seen in other series debuts.
The series follows Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agatha Harkness, who finds herself devoid of power and entangled with a mysterious goth teenager, portrayed by Joe Locke. This teenager helps Agatha break free from a spell, leading her to embark on the Witches’ Road—a dangerous journey that promises the return of her powers if she and her new allies can survive its challenges.
The cast also includes Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, and features guest appearances by Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza. The production team is led by Marvel Studios stalwarts Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos, and Jac Schaeffer, with Trevor Waterson serving as co-producer.
While ‘Agatha All Along’ brings a fresh twist to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its focus on magic and trials, its initial viewership numbers suggest it has some ground to make up to reach the heights of its predecessors.
