Amazon Dismisses God of War Showrunners Stalling Production
Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have officially discarded the developed scripts for the live-action adaptation of the PlayStation franchise ‘God of War’, initiating a complete creative restart. Rafe Judkins, who served as showrunner, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have departed the production after submitting multiple drafts for the series’ first season. The decision halts momentum on a project that has been in active development since March 2022, effectively erasing more than 30 months of pre-production labor in favor of a new creative direction.
The overhaul mirrors recent high-profile pivots in the streaming sector, specifically resembling the creative restructuring of Marvel Studiosโ ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ in late 2023. While the studio praised the writing teamโs narrative framework, Amazon and Sony executives reportedly sought a divergent aesthetic tone for the adaptation of the 2018 Norse mythology-based video game. Cory Barlog, the Creative Director at Santa Monica Studio and director of the original game, remains attached as an executive producer, ensuring the intellectual property retains oversight from its original creators despite the changing leadership.
This reset places significant financial and logistical pressure on Amazonโs genre department. Following the massive capital injection into ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’โwhich reportedly cost upwards of $715 million for rights and production of its first seasonโthe studio is aggressively pursuing a flagship hit to rival HBOโs ‘The Last of Us’. That competing adaptation premiered to 4.7 million viewers on its first night and averaged over 30 million viewers per episode across platforms, setting a high benchmark for prestige video game adaptations. Amazon’s decision to restart ‘God of War’ suggests the executives determined the initial scripts would not yield a comparable critical or commercial return.
Sony Pictures Television is now launching a fresh search for a showrunner capable of managing the complex production requirements of the franchise. The series requires extensive location scouting, likely in environments mimicking the Scandinavian topography of the source material, and heavy VFX implementation for the franchise’s signature mythological beasts. With the writing process returning to square one, a release date before late 2027 is now mathematically improbable, assuming a standard 12-to-18-month development and filming cycle once a new writer is secured.
