Antony Starr Discusses Homelander’s Intricate Ties with Female Characters
As ‘The Boys’ wrapped up its fourth season, Antony Starr, who portrays the complex character Homelander, shared his insights with Vulture about the superhero’s feelings towards women. Contrary to what some might think, Starr clarified that Homelander does not hate women. He pointed out that Homelander’s upbringing in a lab, devoid of parental figures and filled with psychological manipulation, has left him with conflicting emotions about women.
Starr explained that while Homelander craves the nurturing aspect women can offer, his need to dominate often complicates relationships. His interactions with characters like Madelyn Stillwell and Queen Maeve highlight this struggle. According to Starr, working with a supportive cast helps in portraying such a multi-layered personality.
The actor also noted that Homelander feels threatened by men, necessitating him to assert control over them, whereas his interactions with women are influenced by his emotional needs. Starr finds it more intriguing to pose questions through his role, allowing us, the viewers, to explore our interpretations of the character.
With season four ending with Homelander achieving much of what he desired, the anticipation for the final season is building. Karl Urban, who plays Billy Butcher, revealed that fans will have to wait until 2026 for the fifth season to see how the showdown between Butcher and Homelander unfolds.
‘The Boys’, created by Kripke in 2019, has become a flagship show for Prime Video. It has already inspired two spinoffs, ‘Gen V’ and ‘The Boys Presents: Diabolical’, with a third, ‘The Boys: Mexico’, in development. The series boasts a diverse cast including Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, Laz Alonso, and many others, contributing to its success.
As we eagerly await the final chapter of this superhero satire, it’s clear that the depth and complexity of Homelander will continue to be a central focus, challenging us to question what we know about power and vulnerability.
