BAFTA North America Unveils 2025 Breakthrough US Cohort of 12 Rising Creatives
BAFTA North America selects 12 emerging talents for its 2025 Breakthrough US cohort, spotlighting innovators across film, television, and games. The group includes actors, directors, writers, and developers poised for major industry impact. This sixth annual program, sponsored by Apple TV, provides year-long support to accelerate their careers amid rising barriers in entertainment.
The cohort comprises actor Brandon Wilson, known for his role in the Sundance-premiered drama ‘The Graduates’; director Brittany Shyne, whose short film ‘The Space Between’ earned acclaim at Tribeca; and actor Chase Infiniti, who broke out in Ryan Coogler’s ‘One Battle After Another’ alongside Michael B. Jordan. Voice performer Erika Ishii contributes to ‘Ghost of Yลtei,’ a narrative-driven game sequel, while writer-director Eva Victor stars in and helmed her feature ‘Sorry, Baby,’ which closed the 2025 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Writer-producer Frida Pรฉrez co-created the Apple TV+ series ‘The Studio,’ blending comedy and cultural commentary.
Creative director Karla Reyes leads development at a studio focused on inclusive gaming narratives, including titles addressing social justice themes. Cinematographer Mia Cioffi Henry lensed episodes of the FX limited series ‘Under the Bridge,’ capturing Vancouver’s moody atmospheres with a 35mm aesthetic. Writer-director Min Ji โMaggieโ Kang penned ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ a Netflix animated film fusing K-pop and supernatural elements, produced over 18 months with input from actual idols.
Documentary director Paige Bethmann helmed ‘The Last Repair Shop,’ an Oscar-qualifying short on Los Angeles instrument technicians that screened at Telluride. Actor Miles Caton portrays a lead in Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller ‘Sinners,’ filmed in New Orleans with practical effects for nocturnal sequences. Game studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr. founded Strange Scaffold, releasing five indie titles in 2024 alone, including the procedural horror ‘Solar Ash.’

The selection jury features 18 cross-industry experts, including director Channing Godfrey Peoples for film and television, and composer Andrew Prahlow for games. Honorees receive one-on-one mentorship sessions, full BAFTA voting membership, and invitations to 15 international events, including London screenings. Past cohorts have yielded Oscar nominees and Emmy winners within three years of recognition.
Wilson’s ‘The Graduates’ follows first-generation college students navigating identity, shot in 16mm over 25 days in California. Shyne’s ‘The Space Between’ explores intergenerational trauma through nonlinear editing, earning a Student Academy Award. Infiniti trained for six months in martial arts for ‘One Battle After Another,’ a 142-minute epic with 12 action set pieces.
Ishii voices multiple characters in ‘Ghost of Yลtei,’ utilizing motion-capture technology for emotional depth in a 40-hour gameplay loop. Victor’s ‘Sorry, Baby’ budget totaled $1.2 million, funded via grants, and features a score blending indie rock and ambient synths. Pรฉrez’s ‘The Studio’ seasons one through three span 24 episodes, with production shifting to Atlanta for tax incentives.
Reyes’ studio has partnered with three major publishers, releasing games that reached 500,000 downloads collectively. Henry employed Arri Alexa Mini for ‘Under the Bridge,’ achieving a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score for visuals. Kang’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ incorporates 20 original tracks, animated by a Seoul-based team of 80 artists.
Bethmann’s ‘The Last Repair Shop’ runs 40 minutes, interviewing five repair experts with archival footage from 1920s LAUSD programs. Caton’s ‘Sinners’ co-stars Hailee Steinfeld in a 130-minute runtime, emphasizing VFX for creature designs inspired by 1930s Universal horrors. Nelson’s ‘Solar Ash’ iterates on roguelike mechanics, developed with a 15-person team over 14 months.
Benefits extend through December 2026, with cohorts gathering for a Los Angeles kickoff in January. The program has supported 72 US talents since inception, 40% of whom secured lead roles or directorial debuts post-participation. This cohort’s diversity spans five states, with seven identifying as first- or second-generation immigrants.
Selection criteria prioritize projects released between June 2024 and September 2025, emphasizing impact and innovation. BAFTA’s investment totals $2.5 million annually across global Breakthrough initiatives.
