Beau DeMayo Accuses Disney of Firing Him for Being Gay and Black

Beau DeMayo, known for his role in ‘X-Men ’97,’ has made headlines recently after being removed from the show. He was the showrunner and head writer and his exit came just before the first season was set to premiere. Neither DeMayo nor the company initially disclosed why he was dismissed. However, DeMayo has now accused the studio of firing him because he is openly gay and Black.

According to DeMayo, his dismissal was not just about his performance but tied to his identity and his refusal to conform to certain narratives that the studio wanted to push. He expressed these concerns via his OnlyFans account, alleging that the accusations against him were part of a smear campaign to discredit him. Disney and Marvel Studios countered by mentioning an internal investigation that led to findings of inappropriate behavior by DeMayo, including harassment and abuse towards coworkers.

DeMayo’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, has announced that they will be taking legal action, pointing out that the studio’s actions were meant to silence DeMayo and strip him of his statutory rights. This included removing his credits from the second season of ‘X-Men ’97,’ which DeMayo claims he had a significant role in writing. Marvel’s Head of Animation, Brad Winderbaum, later stated that the script had been heavily revised, which justified the decision to remove DeMayo’s credits.

In addition, DeMayo voiced that he felt unsafe after discussing these issues with HR, which he believes contributed to his firing. He insists that the accusations against him are false and serve to distract from the real issue: discrimination within the studio. He claims to have evidence and witnesses to support his allegations and has called for the studio to act honorably.

The controversy further escalated when DeMayo was not invited to the Emmy Awards, despite ‘X-Men ’97’ receiving a nomination. This action, according to DeMayo, is part of the studio’s effort to marginalize and silence him.

DeMayo’s case has garnered public attention, with many waiting to see how it will unfold, especially with the legal proceedings that are expected to follow.
