Beau DeMayo Accuses Fans of ‘Straight-Washing’ Morph’s Feelings for Wolverine
Marvel Studios’ “X-Men ’97” has been a hit, captivating audiences with its engaging story and nods to the original series, along with some notable enhancements to character arcs. Despite the praise, the series has sparked some heated debates, particularly around the character Morph, who was introduced as non-binary. By the third episode, the show subtly suggested a romantic link between Morph and Wolverine, a plot point that became clearer in the season finale.
During a critical moment, as Wolverine recovers from a vicious attack by Magneto, Morph, taking on the form of Jean Grey, offers words of comfort and expresses love. While some might interpret this as a simple act of friendship in tough times, the show’s creator, Beau DeMayo, clarified on social media that it was indeed a display of Morph’s romantic feelings.
From story bible to the script, Morph’s confession to Logan was always romantic. I discussed this openly and often during production. Suggesting otherwise, never mind contradicting the intention of a queer writer-showrunner, is both offensive and straight-washing. #xmen97

Beau DeMayo stressed that portraying Morph’s confession to Logan as romantic was the intention from the beginning, planned and discussed throughout production. He emphasized that any other interpretation contradicts his vision as a queer, Black showrunner, and termed it as straight-washing. DeMayo voiced his disappointment over this during pride month, pointing out how it disrespects his identity and professional role.
Historically, Wolverine has been linked romantically to Jean Grey and other female characters, with recent narratives even suggesting a polyamorous arrangement involving Jean and Scott Summers. Despite these developments, the series makes it clear that Wolverine does not return Morph’s romantic feelings, adding a layer of complexity to Morph’s character.
The backlash from some quarters about Wolverine’s potential romantic dynamics was swiftly countered by DeMayo’s firm stance on the matter. He expressed frustration over the dismissal of his creative direction, particularly when it comes to representation during a culturally significant time.
This tension highlights ongoing challenges in storytelling, especially concerning representation and character development in mainstream media. The discussions around these themes are crucial as they influence how characters are crafted and perceived by audiences worldwide.
