Beau DeMayo Has a Simple Fix for Mahershala Ali’s Blade Movie

Ever since Wesley Snipes stepped onto the scene as the vampire slayer Blade in 1998, the character has won over fans, and the films have been lauded as some of Marvel’s finest pre-MCU work. Anticipation was high when Marvel announced its own Blade film starring Mahershala Ali, but the project has faced significant hurdles.

The Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali was announced over five years ago, yet progress has stalled significantly. Recent reports even suggest the film might be nearing cancellation. After multiple rewrites and the recent departure of director Yann Demange, who left six months after signing on, the project’s future looks bleak. With its scheduled release on November 7, 2025, the film faces a challenging path forward.

Beau DeMayo, formerly involved with ‘X-Men ’97,’ proposed a straightforward solution. He suggests taking a cue from the John Wick movies—substitute mobsters with vampires, replace Keanu Reeves with Mahershala Ali, and give Ali a sword instead of a backstory about his daughter. By keeping production costs to a John Wick-like budget, this approach could produce a sleek Marvel movie for $30-40 million.

Fans have responded positively to DeMayo’s idea, expressing their support for this simpler direction. DeMayo shared his thoughts on X as the cancellation rumors intensified, resonating strongly with the fanbase.

With no immediate production plans and concerns over Ali’s age as delays continue, the need for a decisive action is apparent. The current lack of momentum suggests that development might extend another two to three years if no changes are made.

As enthusiasm for the project wanes, adopting DeMayo’s simpler, fan-supported approach might be Marvel Studios’ best bet. This could potentially reinvigorate interest in the Blade project and ensure its arrival in theaters.
