X-Men ‘97 Writer Beau DeMayo Shares His Idea for Wesley Snipes ‘Old Man’ Blade Movie
Beau DeMayo, known for his work as the creator of X-Men ’97 Season 1, has floated an intriguing idea on X/Twitter. He envisions an older Wesley Snipes returning as Blade in a film inspired by the gritty tone of ‘Logan’. DeMayo imagines a world overtaken by a vampire apocalypse. The human resistance, including a hero named Brother Voodoo, revives Blade to eradicate the vampire threat. He suggests that the film could draw inspiration from the legendary director Akira Kurosawa’s style.
While we’re discussing older Blade films, it’s worth noting that ‘Blade: Trinity’ had a similar idea at its inception. David S. Goyer, the writer, initially imagined the film set in a vampire-dominated post-apocalypse, drawing from the novel ‘I Am Legend’. This concept was ultimately abandoned due to budget constraints and the belief that it strayed too far from the original films’ contemporary setting.
Snipes’ portrayal of Blade is cherished by many, including Ryan Reynolds, who recently expressed his desire to see Snipes don the sunglasses once more for a final farewell. This sentiment comes after Snipes made a return in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, sparking hopes among us that he might reappear in future projects.
As for DeMayo, before diving into the animated world of ‘X-Men ’97’, he was involved with the MCU’s Blade reboot. However, his time with Marvel Studios was cut short under mysterious circumstances right before the world premiere of X-Men ’97. He was removed from the project just two weeks before its debut on Disney+. Despite this setback, DeMayo’s contributions won’t be forgotten as he had already penned the scripts for the second season, although he won’t be overseeing its continuation or the upcoming third season.
Currently, Marvel Studios is focusing on rebooting Blade with Maherasha Ali in the lead role. There are no official plans for Snipes to return in a new Blade movie. However, there’s speculation that Snipes’ Blade might appear in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ alongside other characters from the Fox Universe. This appearance could potentially serve as a grand exit for the character.
While many of us would love to see Snipes swing his sword against vampires once more, the focus for now remains on introducing a new generation to Blade through Ali’s upcoming portrayal. Yet, DeMayo’s vision hints at the untapped potential of an ‘Old Man’ Blade narrative, reminiscent of Logan’s raw and powerful storyline. It’s a concept that stirs the imagination and makes us wonder what could have been if Snipes had one more night to hunt.
