Brie Larson Wants to Quit MCU Because of Toxic Fans

Reports are surfacing that Brie Larson may soon step away from her role as Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She debuted as the character in the 2019 blockbuster ‘Captain Marvel’, which was a huge hit, bringing in over $1 billion globally. Despite the financial success, Larson has faced a lot of harsh criticism.

The backlash seems to be driven by her outspoken political views. Larson has been vocal about gender equality and has criticized the lack of diversity among film critics. She notably expressed disappointment that Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ received poor reviews, attributing this to the predominance of ‘older white dudes’ in the critic community. She’s also been active in social causes, including her efforts with the now-closed Time’s Up initiative to combat harassment and discrimination against women.

Joanna Robinson, an MCU writer, shared on The Watch podcast that Marvel is considering Larson’s departure as they plan a ‘soft reboot’ of the MCU, starting with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2025. Robinson mentioned that Larson’s prominent placement in the MCU and the toxic backlash might be reasons for her to leave the role.

Marvel’s head, Kevin Feige, remains optimistic about the future, stating that the 32 movies released so far have ‘barely scratched the surface’ of his plans for the franchise. This comes at a time when other major actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and sadly, Chadwick Boseman, have also left their superhero roles. The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ cast are set to leave as well.

If Larson does exit, it’ll mark another major change for the MCU, reflecting the ongoing shifts in both the cast and the broader direction of the franchise.
