Casey Affleck Says Meta’s New AI Tool Could Empower Filmmakers Without ‘Studio Heads and Big Budgets’
During a recent fundraising event for The Center at West Park on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, IndieWire caught up with Casey Affleck to discuss an innovative project in the filmmaking world.
The event, held on November 14, included a captivating performance of Kenneth Lonergan’s “Lobby Hero,” which featured an impressive cast including Jamie Hector, Aubrey Plaza, and Josh Radnor, alongside Affleck himself.
Affleck shared insights into his recent collaboration with Blumhouse and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, on their latest venture, Meta Movie Gen.
This new AI tool promises to democratize the filmmaking process by allowing creators to generate high-quality video and audio content from simple text prompts.
According to Affleck, the technology offers a gateway for those who traditionally couldn’t access Hollywood’s hefty budgets to craft expansive and imaginative cinematic worlds.
‘I think they’re cool,’ Affleck expressed with enthusiasm about the tools. ‘It’s a lot of fun.’ He emphasized the potential these tools have to empower filmmakers, allowing them to produce work that rivals big-budget productions.
Meta plans to make these tools widely available next year after an initial feedback phase involving filmmakers like Affleck.
Affleck also pondered the broader implications of AI in cinema. He underscored the need for thoughtful integration of AI technologies, taking into account the well-established protocols within the film industry that protect various stakeholders. ‘It’s exciting to me as a tool just for an artist. It’s really exciting,’ he remarked, hopeful yet mindful of the future.
In other news, Christopher Nolan, who directed Affleck in “Oppenheimer,” is gearing up for his next film project featuring a star-studded cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o.
When asked about a potential reunion with Nolan, Affleck playfully responded, ‘Don’t jinx me. [laughs] I don’t know anything about it. They keep a lid on that stuff.’
As the industry watches these developments, it’s clear that AI might just be the next big co-star in Hollywood.
