DC Is Finally Set to Adapt One of the Best Superman Villains for the First Time

After 31 years since Hank Henshaw transformed into the notorious Cyborg Superman, DC is about to give us what looks like the best version of the villain yet. The upcoming season 3 of ‘My Adventures With Superman’ teased some big developments at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Along with familiar faces like Lex Luthor and Deathstroke, Cyborg Superman was highlighted, promising a major role following his introduction last season.

Henshaw first showed up as a S.T.A.R. Labs employee and an old college buddy of Lois Lane in the second season of ‘My Adventures With Superman’. We saw him again in a dating show, where he made his dislike for Superman clear with a storm-off after declaring, ‘Earth is for earthlings, Superman’. This setup is perfect for his transformation into Cyborg Superman in season 3, following a journey from friend to foe fueled by xenophobia.

The transition from Hank Henshaw to Cyborg Superman has been brewing since his appearance in the show. What remains to be seen is how closely season 3 will stick to the comic’s storyline, where a space accident caused by a solar flare—blamed on Superman—leads to Henshaw’s transformation. This backstory provides a rich ground for exploring his motivations and descent into villainy.

Previous attempts to bring Cyborg Superman to the screen haven’t quite hit the mark. His portrayal in ‘Legion of Superheroes’ and ‘Supergirl’ differed significantly from the comics, with the character serving as a caretaker and an identity disguise, respectively, rather than a true antagonist. This new adaptation promises to dive deeper into the character’s original essence and antagonistic roots.

The emotional stakes are high this season. Henshaw was once close to Lois, which adds a layer of personal conflict as she must come to terms with what her old friend has become. It’s a dynamic that can really elevate the story, giving it emotional depth and making the impact of Henshaw’s transformation felt more acutely.

‘My Adventures With Superman’ excels when it explores the relationships between characters, particularly between Clark and Lois. Introducing Cyborg Superman not just as a villain but as a character with past connections to the protagonists could make his arc one of the most compelling yet.

This season isn’t just about bringing back a villain; it’s about deepening the narrative with characters who have real histories and complicated motives. We’re excited to see a Cyborg Superman who embodies the core of what makes him such a formidable force in the DC universe. Here’s hoping season 3 of ‘My Adventures With Superman’ finally gives us the Cyborg Superman we’ve been waiting for.
