Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ had been leading the box office charts for three consecutive weeks. However, per The Numbers, this weekend marked a shift as it finally fell to second place. Despite a strong performance, it was Blake Lively’s new romantic drama, ‘It Ends with Us‘, that came out on top with a $50 million domestic opening.

Deadpool & Wolverine‘ still managed to rake in $54.2 million this weekend. With its worldwide earnings now surpassing $1 billion according to Deadline, itโ€™s quickly closing in on ‘Joker’s record of $1.078 billion as the highest-grossing R-rated film globally.

Blake Lively’s film, based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, began strong on Friday, outperforming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ with a $24 million haul. The latter made $15.7 million. Over the weekend, however, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ took the lead again on both Saturday and Sunday.

Critics weren’t too kind to ‘It Ends with Us’, giving it a Tomatometer score of just 59%. But audiences disagreed, showing their support with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore. It seems the romantic drama struck a chord with many of us.

In other news, ‘Borderlands‘, despite its stellar cast including Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, didn’t do so well. It earned only $8.8 million against a budget of $100 million. The film received harsh reviews, a mere 10% on the Tomatometer, and a ‘D+’ CinemaScore.

Also, in the box office this weekend, ‘Twisters‘ by Glen Powell held the third spot with $15 million. Following it were ‘Borderlands’ and ‘Despicable Me 4‘ rounding out the top five with $8 million.

The film company NEON had some success too. Their horror film ‘Longlegs‘ featuring Nicolas Cage and the movie ‘Cuckoo’ made it to the top ten, earning $2 million and $3 million respectively.

Next up in the summer movie lineup is ‘Alien: Romulus‘, releasing on August 16. And donโ€™t miss the special 15th anniversary screenings of ‘Coraline’ starting August 15. It’s shaping up to be an exciting month at the movies.
