‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Have Created a Huge Problem For The MCU
The MCU has had a rocky journey since Avengers: Endgame. While still successful, it’s clear the magic isn’t quite the same. Recent big hits like Deadpool & Wolverine and Spider-Man: No Way Home have leaned heavily on nostalgia, bringing back favorite characters from before the MCU era. This reliance on familiar faces and stories is becoming a pattern.
These films, including Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, have done well financially, tapping into our love for the past with characters from the older Marvel films made by Fox and Sony. The success of these movies is clear, but it might be leading to a bigger issue. They’re relying on what worked before, which might be stunting the growth of new stories and heroes.
After Endgame, Marvel tried to introduce new heroes and pass on the torch. Sam Wilson took over as Captain America, and we’ve seen new faces like Shang Chi. But not all of them have clicked with us the same way the original Avengers did. Movies like The Marvels and Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania haven’t resonated as strongly.
It’s not just about new characters struggling to connect. The bigger issue is that these new heroes aren’t coming together like the old Avengers did. We’re getting a lot of standalone stories without seeing how these new characters fit together. Plus, thereโs been no big debut for the Fantastic Four, and the planned Blade reboot is looking uncertain.
Marvel’s strategy of reviving old characters like Wesley Snipes’ Daywalker in Deadpool & Wolverine is fun, but it doesn’t help build new stories. Even bringing Robert Downey Jr. back in a different role feels like a move to draw us in with familiar faces rather than new tales.
We love seeing our old favorites, but it’s time to focus on the future too. Marvel has taught us to look back, but if they keep doing this, where does it leave the new heroes? Itโs a big world, and thereโs room for the old and the new, but the balance has to be just right.
So, whatโs next for the MCU? It’s hard to tell, but they might need to start taking some risks with new stories instead of playing it safe with nostalgia. If not, they could end up stuck in the past, and thatโs not where any of us want to be.
