Disney Confirms ‘Star Wars: Visions’ Volume 3 Returns to Japan for 2025 Release
Lucasfilm officially announced the production of ‘Star Wars: Visions’ Volume 3 during the Disney Content Showcase held at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on Wednesday. The upcoming installment of the animated anthology will revert to the creative parameters of the 2021 debut season by collaborating exclusively with Japanese anime studios. Disney executives confirmed the series is currently in active production and is scheduled to stream globally on Disney+ at an unspecified date in 2025.
The project features a coalition of nine distinct animation houses, including returning industry veterans Production I.G and Trigger, who produced acclaimed shorts for the first volume. The roster expands significantly with the addition of David Production, the studio behind ‘JoJoโs Bizarre Adventure’, and WIT Studio, recognized for their work on ‘Attack on Titan’ and ‘Spy x Family’. Other confirmed participants include Kinema Citrus, Polygon Pictures, Kamikaze Douga, ANIMA, and Project Studio Q, marking a diverse cross-section of 2D and 3D animation capabilities.
This structural pivot departs from the 2023 second volume, which showcased a global collection of studios from countries such as Spain, Chile, and South Korea. “We are returning to Japan to celebrate the world of anime with nine new shorts,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson stated during the APAC presentation, emphasizing the franchise’s enduring popularity in the region. The decision aligns with Disney’s broader regional strategy, as the company unveiled a slate of localized Asian originals to capitalize on the high subscriber engagement for anime content in Pacific markets.
The announcement accompanies a wider expansion of the ‘Star Wars’ broadcast slate, which aims to maintain subscriber retention between major theatrical releases. While narrative details for the individual shorts remain under strict embargo, the anthology format grants directors the creative license to operate outside the established canon timeline without continuity restrictions. The release of Volume 3 will follow the premiere of ‘Andor’ Season 2 in April 2025, further populating the streaming serviceโs release calendar for the upcoming year.
