In a thrilling update from The Boys at San Diego Comic-Con, itโ€™s confirmed that Jensen Ackles will make a comeback as Soldier Boy in the much-anticipated fifth season. Showrunner Eric Kripke shared that exploring the complex dynamics between Soldier Boy and Homelander, his son, was a key reason for bringing Ackles back.

Kripke, while chatting with Gamesradar+ at SDCC 2024, mentioned that the father-son relationship hadn’t been deeply explored in earlier seasons. We got a glimpse of the tension in season 3 when Soldier Boy, who embodies a Captain America-like figure, dismisses Homelander in their dramatic encounter at Vought Tower. Soldier Boy’s harsh rejection of Homelander and an attack on Ryan, Homelanderโ€™s son, set the stage for intense drama.

Season 5 promises a twist, suggesting that Soldier Boy and Homelander might set aside their differences. Kripke revealed that Soldier Boy’s motive for reappearing is driven by his desire to confront Billy Butcher, who betrayed him. This shared animosity toward Butcher hints at a potential alliance, despite their rocky past.

Besides plot reasons, Acklesโ€™s character Soldier Boy was clearly missed in season 4, only appearing briefly in a post-credits scene. His return was met with great enthusiasm at SDCC, proving heโ€™s a favorite among us. Kripke even joked about Ackles’s return despite his ‘tragic ugliness,’ highlighting the light-hearted camaraderie during the panel.

As we eagerly wait for The Boys season 5, set to premiere in 2026, all episodes from seasons 1 through 4 are currently available on Prime Video. The excitement at SDCC underscores how much weโ€™re looking forward to seeing more of Soldier Boy and the evolving dynamics in this gritty superhero saga.
