Fans Are Asking Why Kathleen Kennedy Still Runs Lucasfilm Despite Numerous Setbacks
In the world of Star Wars, the recent years haven’t been too kind. The sequel trilogy didn’t sit well with many fans, feeling like it strayed too far from what made Star Wars special. This, along with other less successful attempts to attract new followers, led to a noticeable disconnect with the longtime audience. They’ve grown indifferent, similar to the new viewers who didn’t latch onto the franchise.
The decisions contributing to this current fanbase sentiment seem heavily influenced by Kathleen Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm. Kennedy, who once learned directly under George Lucas, has overseen the franchise through its ups and mostly downs since Disney acquired the intellectual property.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, despite being a visual spectacle, marked the beginning of the franchise’s troubles under Disney’s banner. Followed by The Last Jedi and recently the cancellation of The Acolyte, it appears the series has been in a downward spiral. The Acolyte, particularly, became one of the least favored Star Wars shows, criticized for breaking from traditional canon which led to a drop in viewership by its finale.
Surprisingly, Kennedy is set to remain at Lucasfilm for at least another year. The cancellation of The Acolyte has sparked a glimmer of hope among us. It seems Disney might shift its strategy, prioritizing quality over quantity for future projects, a move that could potentially restore some of the franchise’s former glory.
Disney’s approach to other series like Willow also reflects this new direction. The Willow series, a sequel to the 1988 movie, was pulled from streaming in an effort by Disney, under Bob Iger’s leadership, to boost profitability. This has led us to worry about the same fate possibly awaiting The Acolyte despite its initial push.
While you can still watch The Acolyte on Disney+, its future remains uncertain. The show’s attempt to modernize the franchise hasn’t resonated well with us, often feeling disconnected from the core themes that define Star Wars.
It’s clear that Disney and Lucasfilm need to tread carefully. They must align closer to the expectations of those who hold the franchise dear while trying to innovate. If not, they risk further alienating fans who have already started looking away from what was once a beloved universe. As we watch these developments, we remain hopeful yet cautious about the next chapters of Star Wars.
