Fans Are Horrified by the Cheap-looking Suits From The Filming of ‘Superman’
James Gunn’s new ‘Superman’ film is stirring up controversy among fans. Currently in production in Cleveland, which now doubles as Metropolis, the movie promises no spoilers on the open set. However, several character appearances including Lex Luthor, Rick Flag Sr., Mr. Terrific, Lois Lane, and a mysterious antagonist possibly Ulysses or Ultraman, have leaked.
Recently, fans got their first look at Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. The reaction was less than favorable, with many saying the costumes look cheap and worse than those in ‘Black Adam,’ which featured Hawkman from the DCEU’s Green Lantern.
The costumes have been criticized for looking rubbery and not fitting well. I think we all were expecting something that matched the epicness of previous costumes, but these felt underwhelming. This isn’t the first setback for Gunn’s project. Earlier criticisms were aimed at the Superman suit, described as ‘baggy’ and ‘rubbery,’ and the casting of the Kent family with less well-known actors. Another wave of disappointment hit when the Kent family’s farm was portrayed as a normal farmhouse, not a lavish estate.
It’s important to remember that these are just early shots, taken from a distance and under natural light. Costumes often look different on screen after they’ve been through post-production. But still, we expect the suits to at least look decent off-camera.
Fans have been vocal about their dissatisfaction, suggesting that the costume designer might need to be replaced if things don’t improve. It seems previous films did a better job at this early stage of making the heroes look heroic.
This isn’t just about superhero costumes; it’s about meeting the expectations set by previous films in the universe. The community’s hope is that these issues will be addressed before the final film is released, ensuring that ‘Superman’ lives up to its name.
