Fans Lose Trust in Dave Filoni, Rally for Tony Gilroy to Helm Star Wars with ‘Dune’-Sized Budget
Tony Gilroy has become a standout figure in the Star Wars community, especially after his work on ‘Andor,’ which many consider one of the best Star Wars projects recently, particularly during Disney’s stewardship. Given its success, there’s a growing section of fans who think Gilroy should have a bigger role in shaping the future of the Star Wars universe.
While Dave Filoni was once the golden boy of Star Wars, handpicked by George Lucas himself, some of us are starting to rethink his contributions, especially now that he’s one of the top people at Disney. There’s a feeling that it might be time for new creativity, and that’s where Tony Gilroy comes in.
We’re eager to see Gilroy take on more projects beyond the Skywalker saga, just like ‘The Acolyte’ did. ‘The Acolyte’ is exploring times untouched by the Skywalker family’s drama, a creative direction many of us find refreshing. Gilroy’s ability to focus on the deeper narrative elements without relying on fan service is a huge plus.
Gilroy mentioned that ‘Andor’ would avoid fan service and instead draw parallels between the Skywalkers and real-world royal families. This approach suggests that under his guidance, Star Wars could explore complex characters and storylines grounded in more relatable, human experiences.
There’s talk that Lucasfilm is considering both Gilroy and Beau Willimon for upcoming projects, which could mean fresh stories set in new timelines or continuing after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ This is exciting because it shows a willingness to delve into the past and explore periods like the era of the Old Republic or even fresh stories that aren’t tied to the previous narratives.
I’m personally ready for Star Wars to break new ground. ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ had characters like Rey Palpatine, and while linking back to the Skywalker saga has its charms, it’s time for something new. We don’t need more recycled stories; we need bold, standalone adventures that push the boundaries of the Star Wars universe.
Diego Luna, star of ‘Andor,’ praised Tony Gilroy’s storytelling, saying his approach could make him the perfect successor to George Lucas. This kind of innovation is what will keep the galaxy far, far away enthralling for new generations.
