Star Wars Fans Urge Disney to Drop Plagueis Arc After ‘The Acolyte’ Letdown
Fans of Star Wars have expressed their disappointment with ‘The Acolyte’s’ season finale. The episode introduced Darth Plagueis in a live-action format, causing a stir among traditional fans. Known from George Lucas’ prequel films, Plagueis is a Sith Lord who could manipulate life itself. Yet, this introduction only served as a setup for a potential second season, leaving many unsatisfied.
From the beginning, the show faced criticism for its portrayal of diversity and inclusion, which some believe distorts the original Star Wars universe. The characters of Osha and Mae were created through mystical means by the Witches of Brendok, hinting at Plagueis’ legendary powers, which could be explored more in upcoming seasons. But we’re wary about this direction.
A key moment in the finale saw Qimir and Osha leave their ocean world to find Master Sol and Mae in Brendok. Amidst their departure, a shadowy figure with yellow eyes appeared, hinting at the Muun species—Plagueis himself. This character was Palpatine’s mentor and featured prominently in Sith lore, known for his ability to prevent death using the Force.
Yet, the handling of Darth Plagueis’ story has been met with backlash. Leslye Headland, involved in the production, has been specifically criticized. Fans on social media platforms like X argue that this tale, quoted by Palpatine as ‘not a story the Jedi would tell,’ should not be expanded by ‘The Acolyte’s writers either. This sentiment reflects a broader discontent with how the new series is integrating into the larger Star Wars narrative.
Moreover, the inclusion of diverse characters and story arcs, such as women being portrayed as more skilled warriors and featuring a lesbian relationship, has added fuel to the fire, with accusations of a ‘woke agenda.’ This has led to calls from us, the fans, for the show to step back from the Darth Plagueis storyline and respect the legacy that brought so many to the Star Wars universe.
Lucasfilm Ltd/Disney, under Kathleen Kennedy’s leadership, now faces a crucial decision on how to proceed with ‘The Acolyte’ amid these strong fan reactions. Many of us are suggesting that they reconsider the direction of the series, especially when considering the revered elements of the original lore.
