In 2019, Aladdin received positive reviews and a whopping $1 billion at the global box office. While it didn’t break new ground as one of Disney’s live-action remakes, it still proved entertaining and showcased Will Smith’s exceptional portrayal of the Genie.
Despite confirming a sequel, there has been little news about it lately. However, we know that director Guy Ritchie is returning for the project. It won’t be based on the animated sequel, The Return of Jafar, which was a direct-to-video release that has been largely forgotten.
Similar to Barry Jenkins’ prequel to The Lion King, the Aladdin sequel will have an original storyline, which is exciting for many reasons. In a recent interview with Collider, Ritchie provided an update on the project.
“I’d very much like to. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun. I would very much like to, we’ll wait and see. We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it’d be great to do, it would be great to go back there.”
Although the release date may still be far off, the promising update on Aladdin 2 gives hope for its eventual arrival.
Director Guy Ritchie is extremely busy, having also been selected to direct Disney’s live-action Hercules, so it’s hard to tell when the movie will hit theaters. However, the longer they take, the more intriguing the sequel could become, particularly if it shows us Aladdin and Jasmine’s lives at a later point.
Additionally, we’re intrigued to see how the Genie will become his former magical self after turning human and getting his happy ending.
Aladdin is a 2019 live-action adaptation of the classic 1992 Disney animated film of the same name. The movie is a musical fantasy that follows the story of a street urchin named Aladdin, who falls in love with Princess Jasmine, the daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah. To win her heart, Aladdin embarks on a magical adventure with the help of a powerful Genie, who grants him three wishes.
The film features Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Will Smith as the Genie. In addition to the iconic music from the original film, the movie includes new songs by composer Alan Menken. Also, it explores the characters and world of Agrabah in new and interesting ways.
The story touches on identity, love, and the consequences of greed and power. Aladdin and Jasmine navigate their relationship in the face of opposition from the villainous Jafar, Sultan’s advisor, who seeks to take control of Agrabah.
