Here’s How Marvel Could Bring Robert Downey Jr. Back in ‘Secret Wars’
Marvel Studios has a golden opportunity to welcome Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU without undoing Tony Stark’s iconic finale. While Tony Starkโs chapter seemed to close with ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ a twist in Marvel Comics paves the way for his return.
In the recent ‘Ultimate Invasion #4’ comic released on September 27, a young Tony Stark transforms not into Iron Man, but into Iron Lad. Intriguingly, this storyline suggests Tony might also morph into the new Ultimate Kang. This twist is a departure from the traditional Marvel narrative where Kang is Nathaniel Richards, related to both Reed Richards and Doctor Doom.

This development in the comics could align perfectly with the upcoming ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ where the villain Kang the Conqueror and his variants from different universes will take center stage. Why not introduce a variant where Tony Stark, the inventor of time travel in the MCU, takes a dark turn and becomes a variant of Kang himself? This could be a timeline that Doctor Strange glimpsed in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ where Tonyโs experiments with time travel take a villainous path.
Such a role would allow Robert Downey Jr. to don the suit once more without compromising the heroic sacrifice Tony made in ‘Endgame.’ It offers a fresh take that could reinvigorate interest in the MCU, potentially drawing fans back to theaters for an experience only Marvel can deliver.
Marvel has a history of pulling from the Ultimate Universe for film inspiration, like they did with Samuel L. Jacksonโs portrayal of Nick Fury. Bringing RDJ back as a Tony Stark variant could serve as a nostalgic nod to one of the franchiseโs most beloved characters while giving him a new twist.
The potential for Robert Downey Jr. to return in such a unique role could rekindle excitement among MCU viewers, providing the cinematic thrills that fans love.
