Reason Why Thanos Never Met Lady Death in the MCU Finally Revealed
In ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ fans witnessed Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, undertake a poignant journey with his daughter Gamora to the desolate Vormir in quest of the Soul Stone. A surprising turn of events was the appearance of Red Skull as the keeper of the stone, a role that Ross Marquand took over from Hugo Weaving.
In a revelation by Marquand during his latest interview, it came to light that the movie could have introduced an intriguing character from the comics—Lady Death, the embodiment of death and Thanos’ love interest.
The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, decided against adding Lady Death to the Infinity Saga at such a late stage. Instead, they chose to acknowledge her subtly through the design of Red Skull’s cloak during his scenes on Vormir. This choice stemmed from their belief that introducing a significant new element like Thanos’ love would require more backstory and development than was feasible at that point in the saga.
In the original comic series ‘The Infinity Gauntlet,’ authored by Jim Starlin, Thanos achieves immense power after acquiring all six Infinity Stones. His ultimate goal is not just universal balance but to court Lady Death herself. He uses the power of the Infinity Gauntlet to erase half of all life, hoping to win her favor. The storyline follows Earth’s remaining heroes, led by Adam Warlock, as they fight back against Thanos.
Ross Marquand, who portrayed Red Skull in the film, discussed during the Edmonton Expo (via @AgentsFandom on X) how the filmmakers initially considered including Lady Death. However, the narrative had already been established, and her introduction was deemed too complex for the concluding chapters of the Infinity Saga.
Marquand, also known for his roles in ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Invincible,’ expressed his interest in exploring other narratives within the MCU at the Cape Town Comic-Con. He shared his vision for a series where Captain America returns the Infinity Stones, highlighting a potential meeting with Red Skull on Vormir. This idea, he suggested, could unfold in a live-action series or an episode of ‘What If…?,’ providing a rich field for storytelling in the expanding Multiverse Saga.
This actor’s enthusiasm for the Marvel universe extends to his hopes for Chris Evans’ return to the MCU, possibly reprising his role as Steve Rogers, considering Evans’ recent re-entry as Human Torch.
‘Avengers: Infinity War’ continues to be a treasure trove of ‘what might have been’ stories and is available for streaming on Disney+. As we look back, it’s clear the creative decisions, though sometimes difficult, shape the stories we love in ways we might not expect.
