Here’s Why So Many People Hated Chris Pratt and Wanted Him Recast as Star-Lord
Chris Pratt’s role as Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has sparked debate. Despite his long tenure as Peter Quill, starting in 2014 with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ there’s a growing demand to see him replaced. After ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ a petition circulated to recast his character, stirring conversations even after the film’s release.
Chris Pratt has faced personal controversies, notably involving his association with Hillsong Church, known for its celebrity following. In 2019, he discussed participating in a religious fast on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ and defended the church against claims of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments, asserting that it welcomes everyone. He emphasized that his faith is important to him, but it doesn’t define his entire life.
Social media hasn’t been kind to Pratt either. A birthday message to his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, sparked criticism for a comment about their ‘healthy daughter,’ which some saw as insensitive towards his son with ex-wife Anna Faris, who faced health issues after birth. Other posts, including election-time jokes and remarks on hunting, also drew backlash.
Despite the controversies, Pratt’s Marvel co-stars have shown him significant support. Robert Downey Jr. and Zoe Saldana, along with filmmaker James Gunn, have publicly backed him. Gunn has been particularly vocal, dismissing calls for Pratt’s recasting and stating that if Pratt goes, the entire ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ team would follow.
As for the future, the likelihood of Marvel Studios recasting Pratt seems slim. While fan campaigns have influenced decisions in the pastโlike Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’ and Gunn’s return to Marvelโthere’s no strong indication that Pratt’s role is at risk unless major new issues arise. He’s confirmed for an upcoming Marvel project, and any change would require significant reasons, akin to the severance of ties with Jonathan Majors by Disney.
For those hoping for a change, the MCU might be heading towards a soft reboot, which could potentially mark the end of Pratt’s portrayal of Star-Lord in future Avengers films. So, while his tenure may not end immediately due to controversy, changes in the franchise’s direction could eventually lead to a new face for Star-Lord.
