Here’s Why There Most Probably Won’t Be ‘The Acolyte’ Season 2
‘The Acolyte’ has been among the more controversial Star Wars series on Disney Plus, drawing as much criticism as notable predecessors like ‘The Last Jedi.’ With its first season wrapped up, the possibility of a second season coming to fruition seems slim, and frankly, the series hasn’t done much to earn one.
The main issue here isn’t the backlash from certain parts of the Star Wars community or its progressive themes. Instead, it’s a basic matter of economics—high costs versus low viewership returns. ‘The Acolyte’ reportedly cost a whopping $180 million for just eight half-hour episodes. Looking at the production, it’s hard to see where all that money went, as the visual and narrative payoff doesn’t quite match up.
Nielsen ratings suggest a lukewarm reception at best, with the series premiere attracting only half the audience of ‘Ahsoka’ and far less than ‘The Mandalorian.’ It ranks as the second least-watched Star Wars series on Disney Plus, only outperforming ‘Andor,’ which, despite its own low viewership, received critical acclaim and secured a second season. ‘The Acolyte’ has neither the critical backing nor the viewership to make a compelling case for continuation.
The less successful Star Wars shows often lack connections to the broader universe that fans are familiar with. While series like ‘Ahsoka,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ and ‘Obi-Wan’ benefit from established characters, ‘The Acolyte’ introduced a new cast without any significant ties to known entities. Even ‘The Mandalorian,’ which also featured new characters, brought in elements familiar to fans, like a character reminiscent of Boba Fett and Grogu, affectionately known as Baby Yoda.
There might be a slight glimmer of hope for the series given Leslye Headland’s plans for future seasons and Disney’s interest in expanding the High Republic era. However, considering the mediocre response and high production costs, it would be a surprise if Disney decides to invest further in a project that hasn’t quite captured the audience’s imagination.
