How Tobey Maguire Inspired Robert Downey Jr. to Become a Superhero Icon
Robert Downey Jr. is a big name in superhero films, thanks to his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man and his upcoming part as Viktor von Doom/Dr. Doom. But it was Tobey Maguire who played a key role in getting him into this world. Downey shared this during a podcast interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Awards Chatter’.
Before taking on the iconic Iron Man role in 2008, Downey had some tough times both in his career and personal life. He had battled substance abuse issues but had been clean for some time when the opportunity came along. What really pulled him towards superhero films was seeing how Maguire dealt with the challenges and rewards of the genre. Maguire, known for his role as Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, showed Downey the ropes. Their films not only did well but also sparked a boom in superhero movies.
One of the things that drew him to entering the world of heroes was seeing how his friend and former co-starย Tobey Maguireย handled it.ย “In real-time, I saw how difficult they were, how rewarding they could be, and how popular [comic book films] were becoming,” said Downey.
Downey and Maguire had become friends after co-starring in the 2000 dramedy ‘Wonder Boys,’ which also featured stars like Michael Douglas and Frances McDormand. Seeing Maguire’s success in Spider-Man, which came out in 2002, inspired Downey to pursue similar roles.
Downey said he was ready for a big change. He had been training hard and listening to advice from his therapist who told him to ‘act like something great is going to happen.’ And something great did happenโDowney landed the role of Iron Man. This role not only brought him back into the spotlight but also made Iron Man one of the top films of 2008 and a favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Though Edward Norton’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ was technically the first MCU film in 2008, it was Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man that really launched the franchise into fame. Downey continued to play the character until a very emotional farewell in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Now, Downey is set to return to the MCU as Dr. Doom in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ His journey from a struggling actor to a superhero legend is a real inspiration, showing us how friendships and a bit of preparation can lead to life-changing roles.
