Hugh Jackman opened up about the toughest part of getting back into superhero shape for Deadpool & Wolverine. At 55, Jackman faced a unique challenge. It wasn’t the physical workouts that were hard for him, but the food consumption needed to build muscle and strength.

Jackman said, ‘To get the size on, that’s the hardest bit.’ He found it fun to return to the role and was thrilled his body still responded well. Despite some initial soreness, he enjoyed the physical training. However, eating enough to bulk up was a struggle. ‘I have to eat a lot,’ he admitted, adding that his naturally skinny body type made it difficult to gain size. The food requirements were the hardest part for him.

Ryan Reynolds, Jackman’s co-star, sympathized with his struggles. Reynolds noted that eating five or six meals a day might sound great to some, but the reality is different. ‘Yeah, the five, six meals a day, which sounds great to some people. I’m sure they’re like, “Well, that sounds great.” But it’s not like the type of food that you would really necessarily enjoy.’

The hard work paid off when Jackman started filming fight scenes for the movie. Reynolds was impressed by Jackman’s physicality and ability to handle complex choreography and stunts. ‘Just the sheer relentlessness that you dedicated yourself towards stunts, choreography. It was the first time I’d ever seen how invaluable a background in song and dance is when you are doing an action movie,’ Reynolds said. He praised Jackman’s speed and confidence in the fight scenes, saying it didn’t matter if he was 25 or 55, it was impressive.

Reynolds added, ‘Watching you do what just looked like a clinic on stunt work was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in my life.’

Deadpool & Wolverine promises to be a movie that packs a punch, with exciting fight scenes and unexpected cameos. It hits theaters on July 26, and we can’t wait to see what surprises it holds.
