IGN Readers Vote Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom Was a Mistakefor the MCU
This year’s SDCC was full of big news about what’s coming next in the MCU. One of the most talked-about moments was the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. is back, but this time he’s playing Doctor Doom, not Iron Man. This news came with the title change of ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
The switch from Kang to Doctor Doom is seen as a move to shift focus. Originally, Jonathan Majors was going to be the next big villain as Kang, but after his assault conviction six months ago, which really hurt his career, it seems like Disney wants to step back from him. We’ve heard that fans have been asking for Majors to come back, but it looks like Disney is going the other way.
With this change, some of us are excited to see RDJ again, but not everyone is happy about him being Doctor Doom. A lot of us think other actors suggested on social media would have been a better match for the role. We’re worried this choice might just be about bringing RDJ back because people love him, not because he’s right for the role. Plus, there’s a concern that the story might feel like it’s being rushed, since Kang was supposed to be a major villain.
Another worry is about messing with one of the MCU’s biggest momentsโIron Man’s sacrifice. And there’s also talk about whether Doctor Doom should look different, as he’s of Romani descent in the comics, and some think this casting could be whitewashing. Fans of Kang are also disappointed because it looks like his story won’t be developed much further.
IGN ran a survey to see what fans think about RDJ as Doctor Doom. Out of 163,152 people who responded, 56.4% aren’t in favor of it, while 43.6% support it. That’s quite a split!
In a nutshell, bringing RDJ back as Doctor Doom has us all talking. I think another actor might have been a better choice, but it looks like this is the path the MCU is taking. Let’s see how it goes!
