‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Can’t Save the Sinking Box Office in 2024
2024 isn’t shaping up to be a great year for the box office, despite some big hits. ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ have done well, but they haven’t been enough to turn things around. Earlier this year, reports were already labeling it as one of the worst years in recent times for cinema earnings.
‘Inside Out 2’ was a beacon of hope this summer, being the first and only movie to hit $1 billion worldwide this year. This was a huge achievement, given that other expected hits hadn’t done as well. For instance, ‘Furiosa’ by George Miller just broke even and was a bit of a letdown, despite positive reviews. ‘The Fall Guy’ also didn’t meet expectations at the ticket counters.
Then came ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which is performing brilliantly. However, even this surge hasn’t corrected the course of this year’s poor box office trend. We’re still seeing less income compared to previous years, and according to Variety, monthly revenues have consistently been lower than last year, except for March. The summer usually boosts box office numbers significantly, but this year, they barely crossed 50% of last year’s totals. This could mark the weakest box office performance in the last 12 years, excluding the pandemic year.
In terms of the big earners, besides ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ there were notable performances from other franchises. ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ ‘Despicable Me 4,’ and ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ had solid showings. New entries in the ‘Bad Boys’ and ‘A Quiet Place’ series also drew crowds. ‘Twisters’ stood out, capturing 72.3% of its earnings domestically, the highest percentage among the top ten.
Here’s a quick look at the top 10 highest earners of the year:
- ‘Inside Out 2’ – $1,525,262,246 ($620,162,246 domestically)
- ‘Dune: Part Two’ – $711,844,358 ($282,144,358 domestically)
- ‘Despicable Me 4’ – $689,051,188 ($302,720,170 domestically)
- ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ – $630,575,919 ($298,575,919 domestically)
- ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ – $567,650,016 ($196,350,016 domestically)
- ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ – $545,846,093 ($193,590,620 domestically)
- ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ – $397,050,375 ($170,945,380 domestically)
- ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ – $395,820,258 ($192,316,713 domestically)
- ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ – $255,501,020 ($136,001,020 domestically)
- ‘Twisters’ – $239,035,650 ($172,935,650 domestically)
We hoped ‘Inside Out 2’ would save the summer, and it certainly made a splash, but it looks like more than one hit was needed to really make a difference this year.
