Is Henry Cavill Losing His Magic Touch? Box Office Results Certainly Say So

Henry Cavillโ€™s recent films havenโ€™t been hitting the mark at the box office. This might raise some eyebrows about his future in big blockbuster films. Letโ€™s take a closer look at how his projects have been performing.

Starting with his stint as Superman, which lasted from 2013 until an uncredited cameo in ‘The Flash’ in 2023, Cavill’s time as the iconic superhero has seen ups and downs. His portrayal received praise for its depth but the darker tone set by Zack Snyder wasn’t a hit with everyone. After a brief tease in ‘Black Adam,’ plans changed when James Gunn decided to go for a younger Superman, leaving Cavill out of future DC films.

Cavill was once a major draw with roles like Superman and Geralt of Rivia in ‘The Witcher.’ His departure from ‘The Witcher’ was a shock to many, especially since he left to pursue the Superman role that eventually went in a different direction. Liam Hemsworth has stepped in to fill his shoes in ‘The Witcher,’ starting from the fourth season.

This year also saw Cavill in two spy-action comedies, which both lost money. Itโ€™s tough to see an actor with such a strong start struggle to find his footing. We really felt the shift when he was let go from the Superman role after an announcement that had fans excited for his return.

โ€˜Argylleโ€™ came with a massive budget of $200 million but only managed to rake in $18 million during its opening weekend. For a movie that costly, those numbers are quite underwhelming. On the other hand, โ€˜The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfareโ€™ had a lower budget at $60 million but didn’t fare much better. It pulled in $27.5 million globally, with $20.5 million coming from domestic audiences.

Thereโ€™s still some hope with Cavillโ€™s next big venture, the ‘Warhammer 40K’ adaptation. But, thereโ€™s a catch. The project is in limbo until Amazon and Games Workshop agree on creative directions by December 2024. If they donโ€™t see eye to eye, the project could be dropped.

Itโ€™s a challenging time for Cavill. His ability to draw crowds was undeniable, but the recent string of underperforming films suggests that even the most popular actors need the right projects to maintain their star status. Hereโ€™s hoping Cavill can turn things around with his future choices.
