It Looks Like Channing Tatum Won’t Be MCU’s Gambit

Channing Tatum’s journey to play Gambit has been filled with ups and downs. Originally, he was supposed to appear as Gambit in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, but was removed from the script. Then, he missed ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ due to scheduling conflicts, where Taylor Kitsch ended up playing the role, much to the fans’ disappointment. His own Gambit film was planned but ultimately canceled due to budget issues and Disney’s acquisition of Fox. This year, his dream seemed to have come true with a cameo as Gambit in ‘Hugh Jackman‘s Deadpool & Wolverine’.

Despite the excitement around his brief appearance, it’s unlikely that Channing Tatum will star in a standalone Gambit film or continue playing the character in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. The cameo was well-received, and Tatum nailed the accent, but it seems like it was more of a nod to his long-standing wish rather than a setup for future roles.

Marvel Studios is likely to focus on younger actors to build their X-Men narratives, aiming to avoid the need for recasts in the near future. This strategy makes it doubtful that Tatum will be the definitive Gambit in the MCU. We might still see him as an alternate version of Gambit, but for now, it’s a wait-and-see situation.

Kevin Feige, when asked by ScreenRant about Gambit joining live-action films after ‘X-Men ’97’, couldn’t confirm any plans but shared his enjoyment over the fan enthusiasm. This response keeps a little hope alive but doesn’t promise much regarding Tatum’s future as Gambit.

Fans have mixed feelings about this. Some are excited at the thought of Tatum reprising his role, while others think his cameo in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was just a special moment for fans rather than a hint at a bigger picture. Much like John Krasinski’s brief stint as Reed Richards, Tatum might face the same fate—appreciated but not extended.

As Marvel Studios gears up to redefine the X-Men within the MCU, we remain hopeful yet realistic about the chances of seeing Channing Tatum as Gambit again. His dream of playing Gambit was realized, if only for a moment, and sometimes that’s all you get in the ever-changing landscape of superhero cinema.
