James Gunn Allows Supergirl Messy Traits Matching Male Superheroes

James Gunn describes the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ film as an anti-hero narrative where the protagonist carries significant emotional burdens. The story centers on Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Milly Alcock, as a universe-traveler in her early twenties entangled in intergalactic conflicts. Following a self-indulgent birthday episode, she pursues retribution alongside an alien named Ruthye, diverging sharply from traditional portrayals.

Gunn highlights the character’s imperfections during a recent interview tied to the DC Universe’s evolution. “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. Sheโ€™s not that at all. Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while,” he stated, underscoring a deliberate shift in representation. This approach contrasts with Superman’s optimistic upbringing, emphasizing Kara’s “demons” and “baggage” shaped by her tumultuous past.

The screenplay by Ana Nogueira adapts elements from the 2021 comic miniseries ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. That six-issue run depicts Kara’s journey across space to fulfill a dying wish, confronting a killer who shattered her sense of heroism. Gunn’s vision amplifies these themes, positioning the film as a gritty exploration of vengeance and vulnerability within the DCU.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, known for ‘Cruella’ and ‘The Hot Zone,’ the project entered development in 2018 under Warner Bros. Production halted in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the initial version was shelved in 2022 by incoming Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Retooling began in 2023 as Gunn and Peter Safran assumed co-CEO roles at DC Studios, integrating it into the rebooted DCU continuity.

Principal photography wrapped earlier this year after Alcock’s casting in 2022 replaced Sasha Calle, who had been announced for an earlier iteration. The film slots into the DCU timeline post-‘Superman,’ the David Corenswet-led entry releasing in July 2026. Gunn’s comments arrive ahead of a teaser trailer expected soon, building anticipation for the June 26 theatrical debut.

This iteration marks the live-action debut of Kara Zor-El outside the Arrowverse, where Melissa Benoist played the role across 116 episodes of ‘Supergirl’ from 2015 to 2021. Gunn’s emphasis on flawed femininity aligns with broader DCU strategies, including HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ series and the animated ‘Creature Commandos’ premiering December 5 on Max. The approach draws from Gunn’s success with irreverent heroes in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘The Suicide Squad.’

Supporting cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem, Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Emerald Eye, and Justice Smith in an undisclosed role. Additional voices feature Eve Ridley and Damon C. Thomas. The production budget remains undisclosed, but DCU films typically range from $150 million to $200 million, reflecting extensive VFX for cosmic sequences.

Gunn’s remarks reflect ongoing industry discussions on gender dynamics in superhero tales. Male leads like Batman and Wolverine have long embraced moral ambiguity, while female counterparts often adhere to unblemished ideals. By greenlighting Kara’s chaos, the DCU aims to balance its ensemble, following female-driven successes like ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Birds of Prey.’

The film’s tone promises a blend of action and introspection, with Gillespie employing practical effects alongside CGI for alien worlds. Early concept art, leaked in 2024, showcased Kara’s redesigned costume with Kryptonian script and a flowing cape. Soundtrack details are pending, though Gunn has teased original compositions akin to his Marvel collaborations.

As DC Studios navigates post-‘The Flash’ restructuring, ‘Supergirl’ represents a pivotal test for Gunn’s interconnected vision. Twelve films and series are slated through 2027, including ‘The Brave and the Bold’ and ‘Swamp Thing.’ This messy Kara could redefine legacy characters, inviting audiences to a more humanized Kryptonian saga.
