James Gunn Confirms J.J. Abrams’ Black Superman Movie Still in the Works
James Gunn has given us an exciting update. The Black-led Superman movie by J.J. Abrams is still happening. This news came from a response Gunn gave to a fan on Threads. He confirmed that Abrams’ Superman film, announced back in February 2021, is moving forward as a DC Elseworlds project.
Abrams is producing the film, and Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the screenplay. This Superman story is separate from the main DC Universe, much like the Batman movies by Matt Reeves. There’s no cast attached to the project yet, and it doesn’t have a release date.
When Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in late 2022, they made some big changes. They decided to scrap the planned Man of Steel 2, which was supposed to star Henry Cavill. Instead, they announced a reboot focusing on a younger Superman, now to be played by David Corenswet.
There has been a lot of uncertainty around Abrams’ Superman movie due to the lack of updates. But Gunn made it clear that the project is still alive. He emphasized that the existence of ‘Superman: Legacy’ doesn’t rule out other Superman stories. He mentioned that Chantal Nong, the executive on Abrams’ project, is very excited about it.

Gunn also said he hasn’t read the script yet but is open to it if the timing is right. He described it as an Elseworlds tale, similar to the ‘Joker’ movie. This means it exists in a separate universe from the main DC storyline.
It’s great to hear that this unique take on Superman is still in the works. With Abrams and Coates involved, we can expect a fresh and exciting version of the iconic superhero. We’ll have to wait and see how this project develops, but it’s definitely something to look forward to.
