James Gunn Promises a Meticulously Crafted DC Universe—A Step Ahead of Early MCU
James Gunn has taken the reins of the DC Universe (DCU) and is steering it into a new era with what appears to be a far more deliberate approach than Marvel’s early efforts. As Marvel prepares to conclude its Multiversal Saga with titles like ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ Gunn is just getting started with his revamped DCU, launching with a film about Superman.
In contrast to Marvel’s Phase 1, which seemed to improvise as it expanded, Gunn stresses that the DCU’s development is fully planned. He’s brought together a team of writers to meticulously outline the story, aiming for a cohesive and structured universe. His strategy is to craft a complex world with morally grey characters, drawing comparisons to the expansive and multifaceted universes of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Game of Thrones.’
Last year, Gunn and Peter Safran, his co-chief, introduced the first phase of the new DCU. This phase includes a lineup featuring not only Superman but also Supergirl, The Authority, and more, emphasizing a mix of gods and monsters. Gunn’s vision is clear: to establish a universe where the superheroes are already well-known by the audience, setting the stage for a grand narrative.
Previously, the DC films, starting with Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel,’ rushed into a ‘Justice League’ crossover in an attempt to mirror Marvel’s success with ‘The Avengers.’ This approach led to several missteps and managerial blunders by Warner Bros, ultimately necessitating a reboot with Gunn’s fresh perspective.
Gunn, in his comments to Comic Book, contrasted his meticulous planning with Marvel’s initial phase, which was more spontaneous and often improvised. Even iconic elements like Iron Man’s closing lines were made up on the spot, and the character of Thanos wasn’t firmly established as the main antagonist until much later in the MCU, with his portrayal varying across different films.
The Avengers themselves, though now seen as a tightly interconnected team leading up to the battle against Thanos in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ weren’t part of a grand plan from the start. Marvel’s strategy evolved over time, often adjusting based on the success of their films and audience reception, which differed from the structured blueprint Gunn is advocating for the DCU.
Gunn is adamant that the DCU will not repeat the early MCU’s mistakes, ensuring that each piece of the DCU puzzle is part of a larger, well-thought-out plan. By emphasizing planning and complex storytelling, Gunn hopes to deliver a series of films and shows that not only captivate but also maintain a consistent and engaging narrative thread.
As we look forward to Gunn’s version of Superman and the unfolding of the new DCU, it’s clear that his approach is to prioritize depth and structure over improvisation, setting the stage for what could be a new era of superhero cinema.
