James Gunn Shares a Plan to Surpass the MCU and Former DCEU
James Gunn is no stranger to superhero movies, having previously worked on the MCU’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ series and experienced the challenges of the DCEU under Zack Snyder’s direction. Now, teamed up with Peter Safran at DC Studios, they’ve kicked off an ambitious reboot and announced a slew of new projects. Over a year since their initial announcement, Gunn’s strategy for crafting a cinematic universe to rival the MCU and the previous DCEU has become clearer.
Currently, Gunn is in Cleveland, transforming it into Metropolis for the filming of ‘Superman.’ Despite mixed reactions to Corenswet’s Superman costume, the leaked set photos have sparked considerable excitement. Gunn has expressed his excitement about starting from scratch on this universe, emphasizing the joy and creative freedom this process has brought. He stressed the importance of maintaining the unique voices of the filmmakers involved, saying ‘Itโs been a blast and artists have had a good time being in on the ground floor of this, helping us to build a universe that still retains the voices of the individual filmmakers.’
The previous DCEU saw its fair share of struggles, mainly due to heavy studio interference which clashed with Snyderโs vision, leading to inconsistency and underwhelming box office performance. On the other hand, the MCU has also faced issues, as noted by Bob Iger, who pointed out the negative impact of reduced executive oversight during the production of ‘The Marvels,’ which correlated with quality control problems and financial losses for some MCU films last year.
In contrast, Gunn’s new DC Universe is set to encompass more than just films and TV shows. He’s integrating animation projects and video games, aiming to create a more interconnected and versatile experience. This approach also includes actors continuing their roles across various formats. For instance, Frank Grillo will bring Rick Flag Sr. to life in both the animated ‘Creature Commandos’ and live-action appearances in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 and ‘Superman.’
Gunn’s commitment to a coherent, creator-driven universe shows promise for overcoming the pitfalls that have historically plagued large-scale superhero franchises. His emphasis on creative freedom and cross-media consistency could very well set the DC Universe on a path to success, distinguishing it from its predecessors and competitors.
