James Gunn Teases How ‘Creature Commandos’ and DCU Will Eclipse ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and the MCU

James Gunn, previously let go by Marvel Studios due to controversial tweets, has since moved on to become Co-CEO of DC Studios along with Peter Safran. This came after his last movie with Marvel, โ€˜Guardians of the Galaxy,โ€™ which wrapped up his chapter with the MCU last year. Gunn is now set to revitalize lesser-known characters in his new venture starting with the animated series ‘Creature Commandos,’ which debuts this December.

The series marks the start of the new DCU (DC Universe), but Gunn and Safran view the forthcoming live-action โ€˜Supermanโ€™ movie as the real kick-off. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn expressed his excitement about the project, emphasizing how ‘Creature Commandos’ will outshine his previous works in the MCU. According to Gunn, the new series will explore darker and more complex themes without the heartfelt charm typical of the Guardians.

In ‘Creature Commandos,’ Gunn takes elements from Mary Shelleyโ€™s classic tale into a modern setting, exploring the tumultuous dynamics between the Bride and Frankenstein. He describes Frankenstein as a well-spoken yet deeply troubled character whose actions are fueled by unrequited love. Another character, G.I. Robot, is portrayed with a touch of tragic innocence, a war robot with a poignant backstory from an alternate World War II where he found belonging only among soldiers.

Gunn reassured that the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie would serve as an authentic introduction to what fans can expect from the DCU, filled with exciting references and teasers for future developments. The film is described as a monumental epic that will give viewers a taste of the new universe’s flavor.

Set to premiere on Max on December 5, โ€˜Creature Commandosโ€™ promises to be an intriguing addition to Gunnโ€™s portfolio and a fresh direction for DCโ€™s cinematic future. With Gunn at the helm, we might just see a universe that not only matches but potentially exceeds the appeal of his MCU work.
