‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed

‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ one of this year’s most awaited sequels, is facing a tough crowd. Despite its premiere just around the corner on October 4, 2024, early screenings have sparked a mix of reviews, leaving the film with a lukewarm 56% score from 63 critics on Rotten Tomatoes (in the time of writing).

Todd Phillips returns as director and co-writer, bringing Joaquin Phoenix back in his Oscar-winning role. The movie also stars Lady Gaga, stepping into the iconic role of Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn. Fans had high hopes with such a stellar lineup and the previous film’s massive success, including two Oscars and over a billion dollars at the box office.

However, the first reactions from early viewers are not very promising. Some fans got a sneak peek, and opinions are wildly divided. The film introduces musical elements, which seems to have turned off a significant portion of the audience. Tweets from viewers like @Blurry_facexo criticized the decision, suggesting that whoever added the musical element ‘should never work in Hollywood again.’

Other reactions ranged from disappointment over misleading trailers—as pointed out by @urbanmyths who noted a scene in the trailer that didn’t make it to the movie—to outright praise for its ambition. A tweet from @cagnibha appreciated the film’s unique take, calling it a ‘brilliantly crafted character driven story told through song numbers,’ yet feared it might not perform well financially.

Criticism also came in strong, with tweets like @AstleTony1 calling the movie ‘Pure TRASH’ despite acknowledging stunning visuals. Similarly, @marvelousmarc96 warned fans of the original movie to stay away, rating it a mere 3/10 and calling it ‘the worst movie of 2024’ that ‘completely ruins the first movie.’

The cast also includes returning actors Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, and new faces like Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland in roles that have yet to be disclosed. The film appears to be shaping up as a divisive chapter in the Joker saga, leaving fans and critics split right down the middle. With such mixed reviews, it’s hard to predict whether ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will be able to replicate the success of its predecessor or if it will falter under the weight of its own bold ambitions.
