Josh Brolin has decided not to take part in HBO’s upcoming series ‘Lanterns,’ which is based on the DC Studios’ Green Lantern character. Sources close to the project confirmed this news to The Hollywood Reporter. Brolin, who was considered for the role of Hal Jordan—a character Ryan Reynolds played in the 2011 film—chose not to proceed with the role after an offer was made in late August.

Chris Mundy of ‘Ozark’ fame is set to run the show for the eight-episode series, working alongside co-writer Damon Lindelof, known for ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Lost,’ and award-winning comics writer Tom King. With production scheduled from January to June in Atlanta, the series is currently in the process of casting and hiring directors.

The show ‘Lanterns’ is poised to bring a dark, gritty edge similar to ‘True Detective,’ focusing on Jordan as he reluctantly mentors John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes. Together, they delve into a murder mystery on Earth with far-reaching consequences. The series aims to pair a younger, newer actor with a more established star for these roles.

Brolin, a frequent face in comic book adaptations, famously portrayed Thanos in James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ directed by the Russo brothers. He was also Cable in ‘Deadpool 2,’ a film where Reynolds humorously referenced his own Green Lantern stint.

The internet showed strong interest in Brolin’s potential involvement as Jordan, although his participation was never confirmed. Rumors also linked other A-list actors like Matthew McConaughey to the role, though he, too, has reportedly turned it down.

As casting continues, the search is on for an actor to fill the younger Lantern role, aiming to complement a seasoned actor with fresh talent. The anticipation around ‘Lanterns’ remains high as fans await to see who will ultimately wear the ring.
