In an interview with the New York Times, she expressed her concerns about the hostile reception from a predominantly male fan base, which often targets women in personal and frightening ways.

The Star Wars community is at a crossroads, with recent projects focusing more on female leads and diverse characters. While some fans applaud these changes, others are critical, claiming that the inclusion feels unauthentic and forced. This discontent has led to vocal online campaigns against new releases, like the yet-to-air show ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte,’ which has already faced boycotts.

Kennedy explained that women involved in Star Wars tend to face more severe backlash than those in other franchises, largely due to the aggressive and personal nature of the attacks. It’s clear that the quality of storytelling in Disney’s broader slate, including Star Wars, has been in decline, as acknowledged by Disney executives like Bob Iger and Marvel’s Kevin Feige. This downturn in quality, rather than the push for diversity, might be at the root of the dissatisfaction among fans.

In Kennedy’s view, the focus should shift from merely adding diverse characters to crafting compelling and engaging narratives — essentially, returning to the roots that originally made these franchises beloved.

While I understand that some fans might feel their favorite series is changing in ways they don’t appreciate, it’s crucial to remember that personal attacks and toxic behaviors are unacceptable. Rather than rejecting changes outright, a focus on constructive criticism and support for storytelling could pave the way for better content, benefiting everyone in the fandom.
