Exciting news for fans of the supernatural thriller genre! The long-anticipated sequel to the 2005 hit Constantine is finally becoming a reality. This time, the movie promises a darker and more intense experience, aiming for an R-rated production.

Director Francis Lawrence is set to lead the project once again, with Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the demon hunter John Constantine. The script, penned by Akiva Goldsman, has recently been completed. Goldsman steps in to replace the original writers, Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a producer on the sequel, shared an amusing yet intriguing update. Despite the script being ready, di Bonaventura admits he’s ‘too scared’ to read it. He expressed his high hopes for the project in a conversation with ComicBook, stating, ‘It’s in my inbox right now, but funny enough, I’m too scared to read it. I want it to be good so bad.’

The first Constantine film featured a stellar cast including Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Peter Stormare. They all delivered performances that captivated audiences and contributed to the film’s success, grossing $230 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo.

Francis Lawrence also reflected on the original movie’s limitations due to PG-13 restrictions, which they plan to avoid this time around. In an interview with Gamespot, he mentioned, ‘We finally have, and Keanu, I, and Akiva Goldsman, who did the movie together originally, are batting around ideas, but we got sort of halted by the strike. However, we are actively coming up with ideas to create a part two, and it will be very rated R.’

The original Constantine is known for its unique take on the anti-smoking narrative, which humorously helped in convincing studio executives to produce the movie. Di Bonaventura shared this snippet from behind the scenes with Collider, saying, ‘I was trying to get a green light, then I ended up becoming one of the producers as I left the studio. Our boss was an ardent anti-smoker, and he was absolutely against this movie because he’s a character. So, there are funny things that get movies made.’

As for what fans can expect from John Constantine in the sequel, he will be portrayed as a more seasoned and insightful character, ready to delve deeper into the eerie and ominous depths of the supernatural.

For those eager to revisit the chilling world of John Constantine, the original film is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime. As we eagerly wait for more updates, it seems Constantine 2 is inching closer to casting its spell once again. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it delivers the thrilling adventure we all hope for!
