Kevin Spacey has secured his first television role since leaving ‘House of Cards’ in 2017. The actor will star in the Italian comedy series ‘Minimarket’. Production on the project begins next year.

Spacey portrays a character who relocates to Italy after facing professional challenges in the United States. The series follows his attempts to manage a small grocery store. Italian producer Andrea Iervolino developed the show specifically for Spacey.

The casting marks Spacey’s return to scripted television following sexual misconduct allegations that led to his exit from Netflix’s flagship political drama. Multiple claims emerged against him during the #MeToo movement. Spacey denied the accusations and faced legal proceedings.

In 2023, a London jury acquitted Spacey on nine charges of sexual offenses involving four men. A New York civil trial earlier found him not liable for battery. Additional cases in the United States resulted in dismissals or settlements.

‘Minimarket’ represents one of Spacey’s initial major projects post-acquittals. He previously appeared in low-budget films like ‘Peter Five Eight’ and ‘Control’. The Italian series provides a platform in European television production.

Iervolino highlighted Spacey’s acting talent as the primary factor in the decision. The producer emphasized separation between personal allegations and professional capabilities. Filming locations include Milan and surrounding areas.

The series consists of eight episodes in its first season. Italian network distribution details remain under negotiation. International streaming options have not been confirmed.

Spacey’s involvement generated immediate industry discussion. Some observers view the role as a tentative comeback attempt. Others note continued caution from major U.S. studios regarding his participation.

The project aligns with growing Italian-English language co-productions targeting global audiences. Recent examples include collaborations featuring established Hollywood names in European settings.

Spacey previously won two Academy Awards for ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘American Beauty’. His portrayal of Frank Underwood in ‘House of Cards’ earned multiple Emmy nominations over six seasons.

This development follows years of limited professional opportunities for the actor. Industry trackers monitor audience reception to gauge potential future bookings.
